Qantas Business Rewards vs Qantas Frequent Flyer

The American Express Qantas Business Rewards card is aimed at small to medium business owners who are looking to earn points in the Qantas Business Rewards program.
The Amex Qantas Business Rewards Card earns a healthy 1.25 Qantas Frequent Flyer Points on most everyday purchases and is boosted to 2 points per dollar when you spend directly with Qantas.

Instead of earning points directly to your personal Qantas Frequent Flyer account, Card members will earn points in their Qantas Business Rewards account (free to join) which is linked to the company ABN.

This means that a business with multiple employees can pool the total points in the business account and from there distribute them to anyone they wish. If you’re not already a Qantas Business Rewards member, they joining fee of $89.5 is waived when you sign up online.

This offers more flexibility to the business owner who can decide how the points are spent. Since they can be sent to anyone with a Qantas Frequent Flyer number, they can be used as a company incentive for example.

Earn Rate On Qantas Products In Australia

2 Qantas Points per $1 spent (uncapped)

Earn Rate On Everyday Purchases

Earn 1.25 Qantas Points per $1 spent on every day spend, except for utilities, insurance (with the exception of American Express) and government bodies where you’ll earn 0.5 Qantas Points per $1 spent

Earn Rate On Qantas Flights

The Qantas Points your business earns when flying will be tripled when you book eligible flights with your Card (this is in addition to the 2 points per $1 earn rate on Qantas products)

Good To Know

After a total of 500,000 Qantas Points is earned in a calendar year, the everyday business earn rate will change from 1.25 to 0.75 Qantas Points per $1 spent.* For Card Members who applied for the Card between 1 July 2023 – 9 January 2024, this change will come into effect from 10 July 2024.

Triple Qantas Points

In addition to standard earn rates, as a QBR member, you earn additional points on Qantas flights when you enter your ABN number at the time of booking. The QBR Points your business earns when flying will be tripled when you book eligible flights with your Card. Eligible flights are either domestic or international flights with a QF number purchased in Australia and operated by Qantas, Emirates or American Airlines. Triple points are capped at 4 million points per membership year.

The QBR points earned are not related to the spend on your Amex QBR Card, but rather based on the Frequent Flyer points the individual earns which is then multiplied by 20-40% depending on your membership level. QBR members start at Level 1 and can move up to Level 3 depending on how many QBR points they earn in a year.

I already have a personal Amex card, can I get the bonus?

If you hold an American Express card issued through your bank (Westpac for example) or through David Jones, you are eligible for 170,000 bonus points.

Keep in mind; it’s perfectly fine to have multiple Amex cards under one account, you just won’t get the sign-up bonus. This means as a business owner; this card would still offer you significant value due to the points earning power generated through everyday business expenses.

Complimentary Travel Insurance

The Qantas Premier Platinum Mastercard also comes with complimentary travel insurance which also includes emergency medical, cancellations, baggage, delays and more. This card also comes with a global car excess waiver. However, there’s an excess of $500.

To be eligible for the insurance, you must meet the following requirements:

All eligible travellers’ airfares must be paid for with your Qantas Premier credit card

Travel must start and end in Australia

Eligible travellers are your spouse (includes husband, wife, fiancee or defacto who has lived with you for at least 6 months) and dependent children up to 19 years old (or up to 25 years old if a dependent student) who travel with the primary cardholder for the entire trip

Additional cardholders are only covered if they are an eligible traveller as outlined above

Eligible travellers must be under 80 years old

As always we would also highly recommend you take 5 minutes of your day to read the PDS (Product Disclosure Statement) to make sure that the insurance on offer will cover you. You can find it right here.
