Qantas and Optus have just launched a limited-time promotion where you can earn a whopping 60,000 Qantas Points if you keep your account open for 3 months at least. This deal reminds me of the Vodafone promo we had in 2018…which happened to be the last ever promotion they did with Qantas; I wonder why!

This promo was brought to my attention by Russ on Instagram when it launched last week, so hat tip to him!

I value 60,000 Qantas Points at around $600. That’s the maximum I’d be willing to pay (but only if I really needed) them.

With that in mind, let’s see how this deal stacks up!

Tip: Ff this seems like a lot of work, check out this offer from Westpac. You could pick up 70,000 bonus Qantas points for $99 or $50 if you’re a Westpac customer.

How to get 60,000 Qantas Points?

To get the points, you must sign up for the 200GB SIM-only plan with Optus before midnight on July 17, 2022.

You will need to keep the plan running for 3 months minimum to get the points. There’s no lock-in contract, so you can technically cancel whenever but obviously, it’s the points we’re after, so 3 months is what you need.

The points will be paid out in a lump sum after the third month, which means there’s a possible chance that you will get charged for a 4th month as well.

The cost?

The cost will depend on how you play this…
For starters, we know we will need to pay at least $297 ( 3 X $99) to get the 60k points. If a 4th month is billed, this could get pushed to $396 (still an excellent price for 60k points).

Here’s my strategy: I plan to keep the account open until day 1 of the 4th month. This will ensure I qualify for the bonus points. I will then call up and cancel (because I have no need for this particular plan other than the points), and if the 4th month is charged, I will request a pro-rata refund.
Having cancelled phone plans before, I know telcos are pretty flexible on pro-rata refunds, so I do not doubt that I will be able to finesse my way out of paying for the 4th month.

Stack with Cashrewards?

Initially, I thought this offer could be stacked with Cashrewards. This would mean you get an additional $30 discount on this particular plan, and of course, if you’re new to Cashrewards, you get an extra $20 when you sign up via our link.

The problem is that this deal isn’t available via the main Optus page… however, there might be a solution.

Since Cashrewards is an affiliate website, they track your transaction via cookies in the browser. So what we can test is if we can manually add the tracking code to the URL on the promo page. Of course, I forgot about Cashrewads when I signed up last week, so I have no data on whether this will work.

Here’s my theory:

First, visit the deal page: https://offer.optus.com.au/qantas; as you can see, it’s on a subdomain which means the code won’t track there ( I think.).

However, once you click the apply button, the subdomain gets redirected to the main Optus page. So here’s where we need to add our tracking code to the URL.

Now, head over to Cashrewards, log in and click the Optus cash back button. It will redirect you to the Optus site.

Once there, look at the URL in your browser and copy everything starting from the “?”

It will look something like this.

Once you have copied that, head over to the other tab you got open (the one where you clicked apply), add the code to the URL and press enter.

The page will now reload, and in theory, your tracking code is now applied…
Then proceed as per normal and sign up.

Alternatively, I’ve heard reports that if you have the Cashrewards Chrome plugin installed, it will automatically track!

Offer Terms

Qantas Frequent Flyer members who are new or existing Optus customers adding and activating a $99 Qantas Promo Plan between 7 am 7 July and 11.5pm 17 July 2022 are eligible to earn 60,000 bonus Qantas Points. Points are awarded to your account in a single instalment at the end of month three from your service activation date. Points are forfeited if you cancel or recontract from your Promo Plan during that period. There are no ongoing Qantas Points earned per dollar spent on your monthly plan fee.

Summing up

Is this a good deal? Yes absolutely! If you value Qantas points, this is somewhat of a no-brainer even if you don’t actually need a new phone plan.

  1. 60,000 Qantas points worth only $300 if converted to cash when booking a flight, so you apy $297 to Optus and get $300 credit from Qantas. Not much catch. What you save is only the cost of your existing phone plan.

  2. The $30 Cashrewards bonus works! (*Chrome Extension installed) I have ordered my Optus $99 sim and received a Cash Rewards purchase + $30 bonus email confirmation a minute after checkout. Thanks Immanuel!

  3. Hi, if I buy $99 sim for 60K Qantas points, can I activate it later? Like in September and still be eligible for points after 3 months (December)?
    Thanks

  4. Unfortunately, if you look closely there are no pro rata refunds anymore. This is in the critical information summary of that plan. So you will need to pay month 4 :/

    See below

    Cancelling your plan
You can cancel your plan at any time by notifying us. You will
not receive a refund of charges paid in advance for the
remainder of any payment cycle, unless otherwise provided in

    • You’re right but my plan is to try it anyway haha. Sometimes being nice on the phone to the agent can work wonders. I’m also considering pre-emptively cancelling the plan once the third payment goes through with a request to get the full 3 months but that could be a risky play…

  5. I got a business class flight lax-Syd may 2023 for 108000 points one way At thee same time this flight was A$9091.00 based on that 60000 points would be worth A$5050.00

    • Indeed, that’s why we love points 😀
To be fair though, the value isn’t really $5050 unless you would be willing to pay that price in cash. Personally, I value my points at the price I would be willing to pay for them.
