Two weeks ago Velocity Frequent Flyer launched a campaign to tempt those with sizeable points balances in Membership Rewards to transfer in exchange for a bonus and in some cases even Gold or Platinum status.

This morning Qantas followed suit with an offer of their own and while it might be tempting for some; I think it’s an inadequate offer.

Here’s the deal:

First of all this offer is targeted to those with an American Express Platinum Card (the metal card that earns Membership Rewards and can transfer to a range of programs including Qantas, Velocity, KrisFlyer, Asia Miles etc.) so it’s somewhat restrictive.

For a limited time, American Express Platinum Card Members can enjoy more value when transferring Membership Rewards points to Qantas.

Between 1 and 31 March 2019, when you transfer your Membership Rewards points to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account, you could receive a bonus Qantas Flight Voucher1 worth up to $1,500 depending on the number of points you transfer.

So instead of giving a bonus in points this time, Qantas has opted for the voucher approach. Personally, I would never transfer Membership Rewards points to Qantas considering there are better programs you can choose from.

However, if you’re one of those people who only use Qantas points I would still wait for a better offer to come around as the current deal isn’t that appealing.
