Why Choose The Amex Platinum Business Card?

The American Express Platinum Business is one of the most rewarding business charge cards in Australia. It's designed for small to medium business owners looking to level up their travel experience and maximise their points earning through the Membership Rewards program.

Unlike some rewards cards that reduce earn rates after reaching certain thresholds, the Platinum Business continues to earn 2.25 Membership Rewards points per dollar spent on eligible purchases, without monthly or annual earning limits.

Membership Rewards Points can be transferred to 14+ airline and hotel loyalty programs, including Qantas Frequent Flyer, Velocity Frequent Flyer, Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, and Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

That huge points flexibility is one of the Platinum Business' biggest strengths. Rather than locking you into a single airline, Membership Rewards can be transferred where award availability and redemption value make the most sense.

Alongside that travel flexibility, Card Members also gain access to a range of business benefits, including flexible spending power. This means that there is no pre-set spending limit. Spending capacity can adapt over time based on factors such as payment history, transaction patterns and business profile.

The American Express Platinum Business can also provide valuable cash flow flexibility, with up to 55 days to pay for eligible purchases. This can help businesses better manage expenses, supplier payments and short-term working capital.

What Could 390,000 Membership Rewards Points Unlock?

Membership Rewards points can unlock some exceptional travel experiences when strategically transferred to airline partners. The limited-time Amex Platinum Business bonus offer of 390,000 Membership Rewards points is substantial enough to unlock a range of business class flights. Here are three standout ways those points could be used.

2. Fiji Return For Two In Business Class

Fly from Sydney to Fiji in Fiji Airways business class. Per person, the return trip costs 87,200 Qantas Points + around $300 AUD in taxes. That means the signup bonus alone is enough to fly two people to Fiji island paradise return in lie-flat business class.

When booking the Fiji Airways A350, business class passengers enjoy a premium experience from the moment they arrive at the airport. You'll get lounge access, priority boarding, and lie-flat business class seats on Fiji's flag carrier.

3. Return Business Class To Vietnam

You could book Vietnam Airlines business class from Perth to Ho Chi Minh City return, using the signup bonus!

One of the more creative ways to maximise Membership Rewards points is through Flying Blue, the loyalty program of Air France and KLM. By transferring Membership Rewards points to Marriott Bonvoy and then onwards to Flying Blue, cardholders can unlock some excellent-value business class redemptions (read more on this in our Amex Transfer Hack guide).

From Perth to Ho Chi Minh City, you'd need around 36,000 Flying Blue miles. Using this strategy, that's an equivalent of approximately 139,500 Membership Rewards Points.

With the current elevated offer of up to 390,000 Membership Rewards points, cardholders could book this trip return and still have more than 110,000 points remaining for future travel.

Why A Charge Card?

The Amex Platinum Business Card is a charge card and not a credit card. This means business users can enjoy flexible spending power on their business card with up to 55 days to pay for purchases.

Unlike a credit card, a charge card must be paid in full each billing cycle. That said, American Express does offer flexible payment options if it’s needed.

Uncapped Earn Rates

The American Express Platinum Business Card earns Membership Rewards Points. This program allows members to transfer points to their airline program of choice on demand.

Earn rates are as follows:

  • 2.25 points per $1 on eligible purchases
  • 1 point per $1 on ATO and government-related spend

One major advantage of the Platinum Business Card is the lack of monthly or annual points earning caps. Unlike many competing rewards cards, eligible business spending continues earning Membership Rewards points, making it particularly attractive for higher-spending businesses.

Lounge Access With Amex Business Platinum

Frequent travellers will get significant value from the Platinum Business Card’s extensive lounge access benefits. From premium Centurion Lounges to Priority Pass and Virgin Australia lounges, cardholders can access thousands of airport lounges worldwide.

  • The Centurion Lounge: access to American Express’ own The Centurion Lounge in Sydney and Melbourne, plus Centurion Lounges overseas. You can bring in one additional guest travelling on the same flight.
  • Priority Pass Lounge: one complimentary Priority Pass Membership, which gives the Primary Card Member access to 1,200 Priority Pass Lounges in 500 airports. The complimentary Priority Pass access is equivalent to the US$469 “Prestige” membership, so it’s a very valuable benefit! You can bring in one additional guest to the Priority Pass Lounge.
  • Plaza Premium Lounge: access to Plaza Premium lounges worldwide, a smaller network of high-quality premium lounges at selected airports. You can bring in one additional guest to the Plaza Premium Lounge.
  • Virgin Australia Lounge: access Virgin Australia's network of domestic lounges when travelling with Virgin Australia. You can also bring one extra guest at no additional cost.
  • Delta Sky Club: access to Delta SkyClub lounges when travelling with Delta Air Lines.

Important Note: American Express has announced changes to lounge access effective July and October 2026. For simplicity, we have used the new policy above. Read more here.

Amex Experiences App

Amex Platinum Card Members get access to the Amex Experiences App, which highlights the card benefits and features and gives notifications about exclusive ticket pre-sales as well as information on which restaurants you can book to redeem your dining credit. The app is available via Google Play and the Apple App Store.

Digital Wallet Integrations

It goes without saying that American Express Cards are some of the most integrated products out there. This means you can easily add your card to your choice of digital wallets, such as Apple Pay, Google Pay and Samsung Pay.

This feature allows users to use their NFC-enabled devices such as phones, smartwatches and bracelets to make payments without having their card present.

Eligibility Criteria

You will need to have an annual business revenue of $75,000 or more, have a valid ABN registered for GST, be 18 years or older, be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, be a director or Controller of the business, and last (but not least) you will need to have a good credit history with no payment defaults.

Bonus Points Eligibility

American Express have a rule which dictates who can and can’t receive a sign up bonus for a new card. As it stands, both personal and business cards are classified under the same umbrella regarding sign up bonuses. Unfortunately, this means that if you currently hold or have held an Amex Card within the last 18 months, you’re not eligible for the sign up bonus.

There is 1 exceptions to this rule: Card Members who have or have held an American Express Corporate Card. Those members can still apply for a personal or business American Express and obtain the bonus offer when meeting all the other criteria.

Summing Up

The American Express Platinum Business Card is an absolute powerhouse for business users who value the premium inclusions and uncapped earn rate. Since this card is a charge card with flexible spending power and up to 55 days of cash flow, it can really open up opportunities for business users looking to scale their business.

For us, one of the most valuable features of this card is the travel insurance benefits and, of course, access to more than 10 airline transfer partners.
