Emirates has revealed a second-generation Premium Economy seat for its Airbus A350 fleet, headlined by an electrically operated privacy divider that extends to the full height of the seat between every passenger.
The seat debuts on newly delivered A350s in a 28-seat, 2-3-2 cabin, four years after Emirates launched Premium Economy in 2022. Emirates is billing it as the world's first electrically powered Premium Economy seat, but that claim doesn't quite hold up. More on that below.
Alongside the privacy screen, the seat itself is electric. Recline, cradle position and preset lounge and meal modes are all controlled from a Passenger Control Unit rather than a lever. Seats remain 20 inches wide with up to 39 inches of pitch, and the cradle recline is designed not to intrude on the row behind. The leather footrest is the one holdout, still deployed by hand.
Emirates has also brought its U-Dream headrest up from Economy, where it launched on the A350 in July. The Safran Seats design has leather side wings that fold inwards to cradle the head, and moves vertically and tilts to suit different heights.
Wireless Charging And New Cameras
Wireless charging arrives in Emirates Premium Economy for the first time, built into the seatback pocket, joined by USB-C power at every seat and a tray table with an integrated phone holder so you can run a second screen during meals.
Entertainment is served on a 13.3-inch 4K HDR touchscreen running the ice system. New A350 deliveries also pick up left and right exterior cameras to go with the existing forward and downward views, a nice touch for the avgeeks.
Is It Really A World First?
Emirates says this is "the world's first electrically powered Premium Economy seat". Japan Airlines would disagree.
JAL introduced electric recline and an electric legrest in Premium Economy on its Airbus A350-1000 in January 2024, and made the same "world's first" claim when it unveiled the cabin in October 2023. That seat, also built by Safran, has been flying for more than two and a half years.
JAL's seat also has privacy partitions, though they are fixed or manually movable rather than powered.
What It Means For Australia
Emirates' only A350 route to Australia is Dubai to Adelaide, operated by the A350-900ULR on EK440/441 since December 2025. That aircraft already carries 28 Premium Economy seats, just the previous manual version.
Emirates has not said which aircraft or routes will receive the new seat first, or whether A350s already in service will be retrofitted.
Until Emirates says more, Adelaide flyers shouldn't assume they'll get the powered divider any time soon. Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth are A380 and 777 routes and are not affected.
Summing Up
The full-height electric privacy screen is a smart addition and a real point of difference in a cabin that is becoming crowded with lookalike products. Wireless charging and preset seat modes are the kind of touches that might justify the Premium Economy fare.
