Your next holiday is just a transfer away thanks to Velocity Frequent Flyer’s latest partner transfer bonus promotion. Members can score up to 25% bonus Velocity Points when transferring their participating credit card, hotel, and other rewards points to Velocity Frequent Flyer.

The loyalty program of Virgin Australia generally runs twice-yearly points transfer bonuses, most often in May and November. But with a break to tradition, Velocity Frequent Flyer is offering its latest promotion one month early, with 15% to 25% bonus points on offer.

This offer is straightforward, with no registration required. There’s also no limit on the number of times you can make a transfer, or how many Velocity Partners you can send points from. To be rewarded, simply make a Velocity Points transfer by 25 October 2022.

Should I Transfer My Points?

The Flight Hacks team is a huge fan of Velocity’s regular transfer bonus promotions, as it’s a great way to make flexible reward points stretch even further. These offers are especially advantageous to anyone with a stash of credit card or hotel program points waiting to be used, who can cash in on an improved transfer rate.

What About Direct-Earn Velocity Cards?

Unfortunately, direct Velocity Points earning credit cards and those cards which transfer to Velocity via an auto-redemption feature will not be eligible for bonus points. Therefore, if you have a rewards card that automatically sends Velocity points after each card statement, that card will not earn bonus points under this promotion.

You can however earn a bonus if you hold an additional card that is part of a flexible rewards program.

How To Earn Bonus Points On Velocity Transfers

Each rewards program will have a different process to get your points across to Velocity Frequent Flyer. To find instructions relevant to your program of choice head on over to the Velocity Partner Transfer Bonus offer page. From there, select the ‘How to transfer’ banner and then locate your reward program (e.g. American Express).

How to Transfer Points to Velocity

Transfer Bonus Unlocks Cheaper Airline Partner Redemptions

Virgin Australia is partnered with some of the world’s best international airlines, who offer Velocity redemptions onboard their fantastic premium cabins. Etihad, Virgin Atlantic, Qatar, Air Canada and Singapore Airlines are just a few of the top-notch carriers that allow booking with Velocity Points.

Clearly, any bonus promotion offers up a chance at cheaper redemptions, allowing anyone in the know to experience these airlines at a fraction of the ticket cost. Let’s take a closer look…

Using Singapore Airlines as an example, say you want to fly from Melbourne to Bangkok in Business class, a journey that sees a typical cash price above AU$3,000. Thanks to Virgin’s partnership with Singapore Airlines, you can cash in 71,000 Velocity Points for that same flight. When we factor in the current promotion, you’d need even less flexible reward points to get to Bangkok in style.

At the standard 2:1 transfer ratio, you would need 142,000 ANZ Reward Points to make such a redemption. But with a 20% transfer bonus, you would only need to send 120,000 ANZ Reward Points. That’s because 120,000 ANZ Reward Points converts to 60,000 Velocity Points, plus you’d receive an additional 12,000 Velocity Points thanks to the 20% transfer bonus. All up, you would receive 72,000 Velocity Points, a fraction above what is needed for a Singapore Airlines Business Class trip from Melbourne to Bangkok.

Should I Transfer My Velocity Points To KrisFlyer With A Bonus?

If you’re a member of KrisFlyer, the loyalty program of Singapore Airlines, you can set up a link between your Velocity and KrisFlyer accounts to convert points and miles between both programs. The useful feature returned in July of this year, with a minimum of 5,000 Velocity Points or KrisFlyer Miles required per transfer. An ‘exchange rate’ of 1.55:1 applies to all transfers, meaning for every 1.55 Velocity Points transferred you’ll receive 1 KrisFlyer Mile, and similarly, for every 1.55 KrisFlyer Miles transferred you’ll receive 1 Velocity Point.

Of course, when you transfer Velocity Points to KrisFlyer, you gain access to Singapore Airlines’ full inventory of award seats across the Star Alliance network. Redeeming directly with Singapore Airlines also grants access to improved availability, making it easier to find a seat on the date you want. Plus, members can also use KrisFlyer Miles for upgrades into Business and First Class cabins. Therefore, if you’re looking at premium travel onboard Singapore Airlines, KrisFlyer might be your best bet.

However, if a specific flight is available as a Velocity Reward Seat, and you’re tied into the Velocity program, it’s most likely going to work out cheaper to redeem using Velocity Points. Using our Melbourne to Bangkok example above, Velocity charges 71,000 Points while KrisFlyer charges 68,500 Miles. With a 1.55:1 exchange rate, you’ll need to convert 106,175 Velocity Points to Singapore Airlines before making that redemption. Of course, a partner transfer bonus does make this more achievable, but it’s still not quite as good as booking a Velocity Reward Seat outright.

Here’s where it gets confusing…

Many flexible rewards programs offer transfers directly to KrisFlyer including American Express Membership Rewards, ANZ Rewards, NAB Rewards, Westpac Altitude Rewards and Amplify Rewards. Apart from Amex which offers 2:1 transfers, most banks offer a 3:1 transfer rate into KrisFlyer. The key takeaway is that a 3:1 transfer into KrisFlyer is worse than a 2:1 transfer into Velocity. Once we factor in bonus points, it’s better off transferring bank points to Velocity before transferring those Velocity Points to KrisFlyer.

Let’s say you have 100,000 ANZ Reward Points. A simple transfer straight to KrisFlyer would get you 33,333 KrisFlyer Miles (3:1). However, if you send those 100,000 ANZ Reward Points to Velocity you can expect 50,000 Velocity Points (2:1) plus a 10,000 point bonus during the current promotion. Those 60,000 Velocity Points can then be sent onwards to KrisFlyer (1.55:1) for 38,709 Miles. Therefore, taking the long way around offers just over 5,000 additional KrisFlyer Miles.

How To Transfer Velocity Points Into KrisFlyer Miles

  2. Select the profile window in the top right and then click “My Velocity”.
  3. Click “Link & Transfer” in the menu bar, then “Airline Points Transfer”.
  4. Select to link your KrisFlyer account and enter your details
  5. Now your accounts are linked you can select “Transfer Now”.
  6. Enter the number of points you wish to convert and confirm to complete your transaction.

Summing Up: My Take

As travel continues to ramp up, so does the cost of airfares, especially on domestic routes and international Business and First Class journeys. Taking advantage of this offer could provide a valuable boost to your Velocity Points balance, bringing that dream holiday redemption one step closer.

With a few simple clicks, you could be sipping champagne aboard Virgin Australia or its newly strengthened partner airlines including Singapore Airlines, Etihad, Qatar and United.

You can often expect transferred points to land in your Velocity account almost instantaneously. However, Velocity does note that transferred points can take up to 72 hours to land in your account once sent from your participating partner.
