Virgin Australia’s New App Features & 50% Faster Airport Check-In

Virgin Australia is doubling down on passenger experience, unveiling major changes to its domestic airport check-in experience and mobile app. Virgin has issued the bold claim that these improvements will reduce passenger check-in time by up to 50% across 10 domestic airports.

The project has been years in the making, and sees the launch of new Virgin Australia App features that were previously available only via the airline’s call centre or airport staff.

From May 2026, Virgin Australia will transition its self-serve check-in kiosks at some major Australian Domestic airports to new bag tag printers only. The airline will entirely remove the option for guests to check in, change seats, or add their Velocity number to bookings via airport kiosks.

Qantas made a similar change four years ago, with many of its airport kiosks now limited to printing bag tags only. While the streamlined process speeds up check-in for most travellers, it also reduces flexibility, meaning passengers who need anything other than a bag tag will still need to queue for a Virgin Australia staff member.

The good news is that Virgin’s new bag tag printers offer a one-step automated bag drop, powered by advanced camera and barcode recognition. Guests will simply need to scan their boarding pass to print a bag tag at the kiosk, then proceed to drop off their bag without needing to rescan their boarding pass.

Virgin Australia will also introduce a dedicated priority bag drop area for Velocity Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus members and Business Class guests at participating domestic airports.

Airports scheduled to offer the new system include:

  • Mackay (in progress)
  • Launceston (in progress)
  • Sydney T2 (late May 2026)
  • Darwin (in 2026)
  • Melbourne T3 (in 2026)
  • Adelaide (in 2026)
  • Sunshine Coast (in 2026)
  • Perth T1 and T2 (in 2026)
  • Gold Coast (in 2026)
  • Brisbane (2026 to early 2027)

Virgin Australia GM, Digital, Alex Plummer, explained that the app update forms part of Virgin’s mission to be Australia's most-loved airline.

“The Virgin Australia app has always been focused on delivering an excellent day of travel experience…Nearly 80 per cent of our guests use the Virgin Australia mobile app and website to check in for flights and manage their booking, so we’re doubling down on improving our digital experience to slash the time it takes to check-in and bag drop by up to 50 per cent.”

“In the year 2000, we were the first airline to launch online check-in, and this is just another chapter in a long history of innovating to make the customer check-in experience like no other,” he said.

New Fly Earlier Benefit

To help reduce congestion during peak travel periods or bad weather, Virgin Australia is introducing a new feature called Fly Earlier. This allows eligible guests to switch to an earlier flight on the same day for free via the Virgin Australia app.

Unlike Fly Ahead, Fly Earlier is available regardless of fare type or Velocity status. However, passengers cannot proactively request the benefit. Instead, Virgin Australia will send eligible travellers a Fly Earlier notification through the app when the airline expects delays, disruption or airport congestion.

If eligible, passengers can view alternative flight options in the Virgin Australia App and switch to an earlier service free of charge.

Upgrade To Business & Economy X In-App

Virgin Australia guests can now bid for Business Class and Economy X seating upgrades directly from the airline’s app.

You can place an UpgradeMe cash bid for Business Class up to 4 hours prior to departure, or bid for extra legroom Economy X seating up to 2 hours before departure.

Request Fly Ahead & Fly Later In-App

Instead of being limited to making Fly Ahead or Fly Later requests at the airport or by calling Virgin Australia, Velocity Gold, Platinum and Platinum Plus members can now request a different flight within the Virgin Australia App.

Fly Ahead allows eligible members to move to an earlier flight with available seats on the day of departure, free of charge. Similarly, Fly Later offers free changes to a later flight on the day of departure, provided seats are available.

  • Fly Ahead is available to Velocity Gold (excluding Lite and Choice fares), Platinum and Platinum Plus members (excluding Lite fares)
  • Fly Later is available to Platinum Plus members (excluding Lite fares)

If you’re eligible, available flight options will be clearly displayed in the Virgin Australia App. In-app requests for Fly Ahead must be made on the day of travel at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure of your preferred earlier flight. For Fly Later, you must request on the day of travel, at least 60 minutes before the scheduled departure of your booked flight.

Fly Ahead Has Become Far Less Valuable

While the new in-app functionality is convenient, unfortunately, Virgin Australia quietly watered down the Fly Ahead benefit over the last decade, before taking an axe to Velocity in 2024. The result was that Velocity status is both less rewarding and more expensive to achieve.

When Fly Ahead first launched, Gold and Platinum members could swap to earlier flights regardless of fare type. But in 2016, Virgin removed Fly Ahead for travellers booked on its cheapest fares, then in 2021, Gold members lost access when travelling on mid-tier Choice fares.

Now Velocity Gold members can only Fly Ahead when booked on Virgin Australia’s most expensive economy fares, called Flex. We compared Virgin Australia’s cheapest fares against Flex on the Melbourne–Sydney route across five random dates. On average, Flex fares were 75% more expensive.

At the same time, Virgin Australia now offers complimentary “Fly Earlier” changes during busy periods or bad weather. This perk is extended to all travellers regardless of Velocity status, and includes those booked on Lite fares.

That significantly undermines the value of Fly Ahead as a premium loyalty perk, especially when elite members are paying substantially more for fares that unlock a benefit non-status travellers can increasingly access for free.

Summing Up: Are Halved Wait Times Realistic?

Virgin Australia says its claim of reducing check in times by up to 50% is based on a one-week trial at Mackay Airport. According to the airline, the trial compared historical check in times against the new process, and found passengers were on their way up to 50% faster.

Whether that efficiency will scale at larger airports remains to be seen, as Virgin’s operation in Mackay is naturally very different to a Melbourne or Sydney departure hall. Virgin currently operates just one route from Mackay, with between two and five daily flights to Brisbane spread throughout the day. In practice, that means the airline would generally only need to process a single Boeing 737 departure at a time.

The streamlined process is still mostly a win for travellers. No one wants to wait in long airport queues, so it’s great to see Virgin Australia investing in ways to make the airport experience faster and less frustrating for its guests.

The new app features are great, but personally, I’m not a fan of bag tag only kiosks at airports. A lot of the time savings come from removing flexibility for passengers, with travellers now forced to use the app or queue for staff assistance if they need to do anything beyond printing a bag tag.

Virgin Australia’s app experience also still feels more restrictive than Qantas in some areas. For example, Virgin often locks seat changes well before departure, while Qantas passengers can typically continue changing seats until boarding if better options become available.
