Right now American Airlines is offering a status challenge to selected members of its AAdvantage program. If you are a “selected” member, you will find the challenge under the promotions tab within your AAdvantage account when logged in.

The status challenge level is different for all members, but if you don’t have any AA status already, gold is the most likely offer or if you’re lucky Platinum (One World Sapphire). Once you activate the status challenge, you will receive all the perks of AAdvantage Gold Status (One World Ruby) within 24h.

The temporary Gold status is valid until May 15, 2019, unless you complete the challenge requirements; in which case you will remain Gold/Platinum until 31 January 2020.

I’ve never flown American Airlines but have purchased AAdvantage miles in recent months (to fly Malaysia Airlines A350 First Class) so my guess is that those who have had some commercial activity with AA in the last 12 months would be selected for the status challenge.

If you have been selected, you have until January 25, 2019, to register under the promotions tab in your account. I registered today, and after logging back into my account, my Gold status has already shown up. Now I just have to decide whether I will try to keep it… (probably not since One World Ruby doesn’t offer many benefits)

Since AAdvantage is a One World frequent flyer program, you will be able to use your gold status to:

  • Access to Business Class priority check-in
  • Access to preferred or pre-reserved seating (where offered)
  • Priority on waitlists and when on standby (where offered)

Perks when flying American Airlines:

  • Complimentary auto-requested upgrades on flights 500 miles or less
  • 24-hour upgrade window
  • 40% elite mileage bonus
  • Complimentary Main Cabin Extra Seats at check-in+
  • Complimentary Preferred Seats
  • 1 free checked bag

AAdvantage Gold Status Match In Conclusion

Even though AAdvantage Gold isn’t really worth much, it’s worth it to check your account to see if you have been selected for a AAdvantage Platinum which is equal to One World Sapphire and would give you lounge access.

Have you been selected under this recent promotion?
