NSW Scraps 7 Day Home Quarantine For Travellers But There’s A Catch

The brand new NSW premier Dominic Perrottet held a press conference this morning where he declared hotel quarantine was over as of November 1 for all those double vaccinated, including tourists to Sydney and NSW.
Here’s the original press conference (I’ve time stamped the announcement)

While everyone started celebrating and booking flights, the prime minister scrambled to contain the “damage” and pull the premier inline.

Here’s the Prime Minister’s response:

So while you might be seeing news saying that everyone is welcome, this isn’t; the case and tourists and temporary visa holders are not yet welcome to Australia.

Here’s What We Know

  • From November 1, Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family will be allowed to return to Australia without doing 7 days home quarantine, provided they are fully vaccinated with a recognised Australian vaccine.
  • Those who aren’t vaccinated will still need to complete 2 weeks of hotel quarantine at their own expense. The arrivals cap will be 210 arrivals per week.
  • A negative PCR test will still be required even if you’re vaccinated.
  • New Zealand citizens and their immediate families who normally reside in Australia will also enjoy the same rules.
  • Temporary visa holders will not be part of this group unless they have an immediate family member who is Australian/NZ citizen. This includes student visa holders, skilled visa holders etc. etc.
  • If your parents are not Australian citizens/pr, but you are, your parents will be able to fly to NSW and enjoy a quarantine free experience as well.
  • International students will also not be included in quarantine free travel as it stands.
  • While this rule is fantastic news for NSW, it doesn’t help those in other states who would still need to quarantine if they flew in from NSW or overseas.
  • If you live in another state such as WA or QLD, you will be able to leave the country without restrictions and fly back to NSW without restrictions but you will still be subject to quarantine requirements if you were to return to another state from NSW.
