Yesterday Qatar Airways launched a flash sale, selling miles at 50% discount. While it’s the highest discount we’ve ever seen, the question is: should you buy AND is there any value to be had?

As a quick backstory, Qatar Airways devalued its frequent flyer program in 2018 without any notice. At the time it pretty much rendered their miles useless. But then, covid struck and a few weeks ago, we saw a 180 backflip on the devaluation. Check out my full guide on the changes here.

On top of reinstating 2018 award pricing, Qatar Airways also scrapped the airline surcharge, which is a pretty big deal. For example, Australia to Europe would quickly attract a surcharge of $450 in business class. This is now gone!

By implementing all these positive changes, Qatar Airways’s Privilege Club program is now one of the best ways to fly Qatar Airways business or first on a budget using miles.

Is there value to be had?

Looking at late next year, Qatar Airways business class return airfares to Europe from Australia are clocking in at just over $8,700, and the USA comes in at just over $10,000. Not exactly cheap (in perspective, Eithad has fares from $5700 return).

Based on this information, you could potentially fly Qatar Airways business class for 50% off!

Let’s look at some pricing:

  • Australia to Europe in Business: 180,000 QR Miles return = AU$3807
  • Australia to the USA in Business: 240,000 QR Miles return = AU$5076

When does this promo end?

The 50% discount ends today, so there’s not much time to make up your mind. For me personally, I will be sitting this one out. However, if you have a redemption in mind for later next year, this could be the opportunity to score your trip at a 50% discount (providing we can actually go anywhere!).

Limitations

If you’re a brand new Qatar Airways Privilege Club member, you’re out of luck. To buy miles, you will need to have earned at least 1,000 QR miles at some stage after becoming a member. On top of that, the maximum amount of miles you can purchase each year is 250,000.
