Buying Qantas Points can be a convenient way to top up your balance and secure a Classic Reward flight, especially if you're only a few points short. While you can always buy Qantas Points through the Top-up Points program, the airline also offers bonus promotions that can significantly increase the value.

Right now, Qantas Frequent Flyer is offering up to 50% bonus points on Qantas Top-up Points purchases until 27 June 2026. We usually don't recommend buying Qantas Points at the standard price, but this 50% bonus significantly improves the value and could make sense if you're planning a trip.

But the question remains: should you buy Qantas Points, even with a bonus? The answer isn't always straightforward, so let's dive in!

Qantas Frequent Flyer is currently offering a 25% to 50% bonus when members buy Qantas Points through its Top-up Points program. The highest bonus is available on purchases of 100,000 Qantas Points or more.

The Qantas top-up points bonus is based on the number of points you buy:

• 25% bonus on 15,000 – 95,000 points
• 50% bonus on 100,000 – 150,000 points

Is This Qantas Top-Up Points Offer Worth It?

When you buy Qantas Points under the current promotion, you would be paying as little as 1.78 cents per point. That's based on a purchase of the maximum 150,000 Qantas Top-up Points for AU$3,999, receiving a total of 225,000 Qantas Points after the 50% bonus.

While this isn't the largest Qantas Top-up Points promotion we've seen, it's still a reasonably strong offer. Besides, it's relatively easy to redeem Qantas Points for 5+ cents per point when booking Classic Flight Rewards in Business and First Class. However, if you mainly redeem points for Economy flights, it might be harder to achieve the same level of value.

On the lower end, buying Qantas Points at the minimum eligible purchase of 15,000 Qantas Top-up Points costs an effective 2.84 cents per point.

Can You Buy Qantas Points?

Absolutely! Like many other airline loyalty programs, Qantas allows its Frequent Flyer members to buy Qantas Points directly.

While purchasing Qantas Points is easy, the standard price can be quite expensive. Most of the time, it doesn't make sense to buy Qantas Points unless you're taking advantage of a bonus or discount promotion.

That said, purchasing Qantas Top-up Points can make sense if you need a small amount to reach the points required for a reward booking. For example, if you're just 5,000 Qantas Points short of securing a Business Class redemption, purchasing points can provide value.

However, if you're looking to buy a large number of Qantas Points, it's usually worth waiting for one of Qantas' regular bonus promotions, as they significantly reduce the effective cost per point.

How To Buy Qantas Points

Purchasing Qantas Points is straightforward through the Qantas Top-up Points program.

The main requirement is that your Qantas account must be at least 30 days old before you can buy Qantas Points. If you're not already a member, it's easy to join Qantas Frequent Flyer for free using one of the many promotional sign-up links (please don't pay Qantas' insane $99.50 joining fee!).

How to purchase Qantas Points:

1. Log in to your Qantas Frequent Flyer account.
2. Navigate to the Top-up Points page, where you'll find an option to select the number of points you wish to buy.
3. Choose the desired points increment (points are sold in multiples of 1,000).
4. Proceed to payment using a credit or debit card.

Is Buying Qantas Points Worth It?

To decide if purchasing Qantas Points is worthwhile, consider these factors:

• Redemption Value: Calculate the value of your redemption. For example, a Sydney to Singapore Business Classic Reward requires 82,100 Qantas Points plus taxes and fees. If you buy Qantas Points at 1.78 cents per point during the 50% bonus promotion, those points would cost around AU$1,461. Add the applicable taxes and fees, and compare the total to the cash fare. At the time of writing, Qantas is charging around AU$4,180 for the same Business Class flight, making buying Qantas Points a potentially attractive option.
• Taxes and Fees: When booking reward flights, you’ll need to pay additional taxes and fees. These costs can sometimes make redemptions less attractive.
• Alternatives: Check if cheaper ways to earn points (credit card sign-up bonuses, partner offers) can get you closer to your goal.

Buying points isn’t the only way to boost your balance. Here are some alternatives that can offer better value:
