Singapore Airlines Will Return A380 Superjumbo To Melbourne In 2023

It’s been a long time coming, but today Singapore Airlines has finally revealed plans to return the Airbus A380 to Melbourne. The Singaporean superjumbo will return to Melbourne for the first time in almost four years, while Sydney is set to receive a second daily A380.

From 16 May through to 28 October 2023, Singapore Airlines will swap out the Boeing 777-300ER in favour of the A380 on it’s daytime Melbourne terminator. The world’s largest passenger aircraft is set to depart Singapore as SQ237 at 12:25am to arrive in Melbourne at 10:50am. The return SQ228 departs Melbourne at 4:40pm to arrive in Singapore at 9:20pm.

Singapore Airlines Regional Vice President South West Pacific, Mr Louis Arul, said the Airbus A380 would deliver a welcome capacity boost to Melbourne services.

“Travel demand remains strong for 2023, particularly during the Northern Summer period. The relaxation of border controls in Southeast Asia and parts of East Asia has resulted in an uptick in travel which we expect will continue into the Northern Summer peak.” Mr Arul said.

“Deploying the A380 over the peak period will also see us exceed our pre-Covid seat capacity to Melbourne, operating at 110% when compared to our operations of January of 2020.

In addition to the whale’s return to Melbourne, Sydney will welcome a second A380 from 17 May 2023. Singapore Airlines will deploy the A380 on its overnight SQ221 and midday SQ232 operations between Sydney and the garden city, instead of the current A350-900 aircraft.

The return of a second A380 into Sydney will take Singapore Airlines to 98% of its pre-Covid seat capacity from the NSW capital. The change also brings Suites or First Class to three of the four daily flights between Singapore and Sydney.

On the topic Mr Arul said the deployment of two A380 aircraft to Sydney is part of a broader capacity change across the network.

“Returning double-daily A380 operations to Sydney reinforces our longstanding commitment to the NSW market. It will also enhance the product offering for our customers, delivering more seats across our premium cabins, as well as increased capacity in Economy Class.” he said.

Of course, these updated flight schedules are subject to regulatory approval, and are yet to show online for sale. But as it stands, Singapore Airlines’ Australian schedule operates as below;
