Vietjet Launches Vietnam & Thailand Flights From Western Sydney
Vietjet bets big on Sydney's new airport
Vietnamese budget airline Vietjet is set to launch direct flights from Western Sydney Airport (WSI) to both Vietnam and Thailand.
From 10 January 2027, Vietjet will operate twice weekly from Western Sydney to Ho Chi Minh City, increasing to three times weekly in March.
VJ88 departs Western Sydney at 12:05pm, arriving into Ho Chi Minh at 4:40pm. The return VJ87 operates as a redeye, departing Ho Chi Minh at 9:25pm for a Western Sydney touchdown at 10am the following morning. The scheduled duration on both legs is 8 hours 35 minutes.
Separately, Vietjet Thailand plans to launch four weekly services between WSI and Bangkok from November 2027, subject to regulatory approval.
Both routes will be operated by Vietjet's Airbus A330, fitted with 12 angled lie-flat business class seats and 365 economy seats. The economy cabin is notably tight by industry standards, with just 16.5 inches (41.9cm) of seat width. It’s a result of Vietjet squeezing nine seats into each row, rather than the usual eight on a standard A330. By comparison, Qantas' A330 economy seats offer 18 inches (45.7cm) of width.

Vietjet is the fifth airline to sign up for flights at Western Sydney Airport, joining Jetstar, Air New Zealand, Singapore Airlines and Qantas. The route is backed by the NSW Government's Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund, a $16 million program designed to get airlines to commit to the new airport.
“Vietnam is an incredibly popular destination for Aussie travellers – in 2025 alone more than half a million people traveled between New South Wales and Vietnam,” says Western Sydney Airport CEO Simon Hickey.
“Add to that, Western Sydney is one of the nation’s most diverse and rapidly growing regions that is proudly home to more than half of Greater Sydney’s Vietnamese population,” he adds.

Summing Up
As mentioned, Vietjet is the fifth airline committed to flying from the new Western Sydney Airport, and this is also the fifth Australian destination for the airline, alongside Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney (Kingsford Smith).
Vietjet reportedly has big plans for Australia. Back in June, news broke that the Vietnamese budget carrier was in talks with Australian regulators about launching a domestic subsidiary in Australia. That news broke through an anonymous source cited by the AFR, and went as far as linking Vietjet to a mystery slot allocation at Sydney Airport for the 2026/27 Northern Winter season. If that eventuates, Vietjet would be the first airline to challenge Qantas and Virgin Australia on Australian domestic routes in over a decade.
