Virgin Australia Launches Canberra To Bali Flights

Virgin Australia will launch its first-ever international route from Canberra, adding direct flights to Bali (Denpasar) from 22 June 2026.

The new service will operate three return flights per week (Monday, Wednesday and Saturday) and will be the only direct service on the route.

Virgin says the route will add more than 40,000 seats each year between Canberra and Bali, using Boeing 737-800 aircraft with Business, Economy and Economy X cabins.

Virgin Australia CEO Dave Emerson said: “This is the first time in the history of the company that we will operate internationally from the capital, marking an important milestone in our broader network expansion story,” adding: “Virgin Australia will be the only Australia-based airline operating internationally out of Canberra, and the only carrier on this new route.”

Canberra Airport CEO Stephen Byron said: “Bali is one of Australia’s most popular international holiday destinations, and we know this service will be warmly welcomed by travellers across the region,” adding: “We’re delighted to be expanding our network with Virgin Australia and introducing Virgin Australia’s first international service from Canberra, with hopes that this marks the start of further international growth with Virgin Australia.”

The new Canberra flights will complement Virgin Australia’s existing direct Bali services from Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and the Gold Coast. Virgin also notes there are same-day connections from Canberra to those ports, designed to improve onward connectivity between Australia and Bali.

Virgin said demand for Indonesia continues to grow, noting: “Indonesia has now overtaken New Zealand as one of Australia’s most popular international travel destinations.” The airline added: “Last year, we carried more than half a million guests between Australia and Bali, and it’s great to see demand for the destination continue to grow.”

Using Velocity Points

Velocity Frequent Flyer members will be able to use points on the new Canberra–Bali flights, and Flight Hacks can see Reward Seat inventory already loaded for the route, with availability showing in both Economy and Business across a range of dates.

How to use Velocity points to fly business class to Bali

This means a new credit card welcome bonus such as this one would get you a return flight to Bali in business class!

Based on Velocity’s current international short-haul reward table, Canberra–Denpasar sits in the 2,401–3,600 mile band, which prices at:

  • 22,500 Velocity Points one-way in Economy + taxes & fees
  • 49,500 Velocity Points one-way in Business + taxes & fees

In Conclusion

It’s great to see Virgin Australia adding more international flying, especially with its first-ever international service out of the nation’s capital. The only real downside is the aircraft: for a flight that’s a touch over 6 hours, Virgin will be using a Boeing 737, while Qantas and Garuda typically operate widebody A330s on some Bali routes from Sydney. Still, Virgin looks to be starting on the front foot, with sharp pricing in both Economy and Business that will likely appeal to Canberra travellers.
