ANA Unveils “THE Room FX”: A Next-Gen Business Class Seat for the 787-9
ANA just dropped a new business class seat for its 787s. The Room FX brings serious space, privacy, and comfort to the Dreamliner.
I'm on the ground at the Paris Air Show today as ANA officially pulled the curtain on its brand-new business class seat: “THE Room FX.” If you’re already familiar with the ultra-wide “THE Room” seat found on ANA’s 777-300ERs, this new version for the Boeing 787-9 keeps the best parts and makes some smart changes for the Dreamliner cabin. A key difference between The Room and The Room FX is that The Room FX has no recline functionality, no doubt this is a choice to save on weight and space, something Finnair already achieved with their excellent A350 business class seat.
Set to launch in 2026 (potentially May), “THE Room FX” is ANA’s first business class refresh for a mid-size aircraft in over a decade.

And yes, it comes with a sliding privacy door, as you’d expect from any serious business class product these days. The new seat will be a welcome replacement for the somewhat dated product you can currently find on the ANA B787 fleet.
A Familiar Design, Reimagined for the 787
ANA worked with long-time design partners Safran Seats and Acumen Design Associates to develop this seat exclusively for the airline. While “The Room” on the 777 is still one of the most spacious business seats flying, the challenge here was to bring a similar experience to a narrower fuselage without sacrificing comfort or space.

Inside the 787-9, ANA has managed to reconfigure the cabin with a staggered forward/rear-facing layout that maximises the Dreamliner’s width.

The result? A cabin that doesn’t feel like a compromise and feels very much familiar to their excellent "The Room" which is found onboard the B777.
Seat Highlights:
The Room FX has all the bells and whistles you’d want for long-haul flying:
- Pre-reclined seats that feel more like a lounge than a traditional upright position.
- A sofa-style bed mode with adjustable leg rests.
- Massive side consoles for personal items and drinks.
- A larger in-flight entertainment screen (1.4x bigger than the current 787 product).
- USB-C, wireless charging, and Bluetooth audio support.
- Privacy doors that are now slimmer to save weight and maximise space.

Speaking of weight, ANA has kept things light by redesigning elements like the door and seat shell. Despite all the added features, the new seat weighs about the same as the older 787 product.
What’s Next?
ANA will begin rolling out ThE Room FX across long-haul B787-9 routes starting in 2026. No exact routes have been locked in yet, but based on the existing 787 network, we’re likely to see it pop up on major North America and Europe services.
