Starwood has one of the most desirable points programs in the world, and from time to time these points go on sale. Through to May 31, 2018, you can buy Starpoints with a discount of up to 35%.
Before jumping in, here are a few thing you need to keep in mind:
- Have a Starwood account that’s at least 14 days old (open one here)
- Minimum amount of points to buy for 35% discount: 5000

- When transferring to an airline partner, do so in blocks of 20,000 as you will get a 5000 points bonus.
Starwood (SPG) allows members to buy up to 30,000 Starpoints per calendar year, so it’s generally worth waiting for a sale like this to take advantage. You can get around this minimum buying limit by using the family transfer feature within the SPG program. Note that in order to do a family transfer, the other person needs to be registered at the same address. (You can request a family transfer here)
Normally Starpoints are sold for 3.5 cents (US) per point but if you buy the minimum amount of 5000 points you can get them as low as 2.275 cents (US) per point. You can buy SPG points with a 35% discount by clicking here.
Starpoints are not only great for booking luxury hotels; their true value lies in the fact that they can be transferred to an extensive list of airline partners.
Starpoints transfer at a 1:1 ratio to the majority of transfer partners and best of all, you get a 5000 point bonus for every 20,000 points transferred. This means 30,000 Starpoints can turn into 35,000 airline miles. If you have an American Express card, you could send some additional points to SPG to push your total to 40k and transfer to your preferred airline partner in two, 20,000 lots. Keep in mind that points transfers aren’t instant so you might be left waiting for 48h or so.
Should you buy SPG Starpoints? (yes!)
Normally I don’t promote the speculative buying of points, but in this case, the deal is good enough to stockpile some for later use. The Australian dollar is pretty strong against the USD at the moment which makes a good case for topping up.
