Etihad & Emirates Status Extensions
Emirates & Etihad Follow Qatar Airways With Loyalty Program Relief For Affected Members
Following Qatar Airways' 3-month Privilege Club status extension earlier this week, both Emirates and Etihad have announced their own loyalty program adjustments to support members affected by the ongoing airspace disruptions.
Each airline has taken a slightly different approach, so let's break down what's on the table.
Emirates Skywards
Emirates is offering a combination of tier protection and miles expiry relief:
- Tier downgrades on hold: If your tier review date falls between 31 March and 31 May 2026, it's been pushed to 30 June 2026. So if you were about to lose your Silver, Gold or Platinum status, you've got extra breathing room.
- Miles expiry paused: Any Skywards Miles due to expire between March and May 2026 are now valid until 30 June 2026. This also applies to miles in Skysurfers and My Family accounts.
- Skywards+ benefits extended: Packages and privileges expiring in the same window have been extended to 30 June as well, covering perks like lounge access and discounted upgrade rewards.
Emirates SVP of Skywards Dr. Nejib Ben Khedher framed it as giving members "more time to use your Skywards Miles" and ensuring "uninterrupted benefits" while travel plans are disrupted.
Etihad Guest
Etihad has gone a different route, instead of a flat status extension, they've reduced tier qualification requirements by 25% across the board. Here's the detail:
- The reduced thresholds apply from 18 March 2026 until 31 March 2027, so you've got a full year of easier qualification.
- It applies to members who held Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum status as of 18 March 2026.
- No registration required, the reduced thresholds are applied automatically.
- Emerald tier is excluded from the reduction.
There's also been instances where members have been upgraded to the next tier. A friend of mine was Etihad Guest Silver and close to hitting Gold, and she was automatically upgraded to Gold. So it appears Etihad is also bumping up members who were close to the next tier, though the exact conditions for that aren't fully clear yet.
How Do The Three Compare?
Each airline has taken a different approach:
Qatar Airways went with a straightforward 3-month status extension for all Privilege Club members (Silver, Gold and Platinum) whose status was due for renewal.
Emirates is holding off tier downgrades until 30 June and pausing miles expiry — a decent buffer, but relatively short-term.
Etihad is arguably the most aggressive, with a 25% reduction in qualification requirements for an entire year. This doesn't just protect your current status, it also makes it genuinely easier to move up.
My Take
All three airlines were in an impossible position. You can't ground your fleet for weeks and then penalise your most loyal customers for not flying enough. These moves were necessary, and to their credit, all three have delivered.
If I had to pick a winner, Etihad's approach is the most forward-thinking unless your status was due to expire, in which case it appears Etihad is upgrading members who were close to the next tier behind the scenes. A 25% reduction for a full year is a smart play to win over existing and new customers looking to rise in the Etihad Guest ranks.
That said, it's still early days. Emirates' offer feels like an initial response (they had to do something after Qatar Airways moved first), and I wouldn't be surprised if they expand it depending on how the situation develops.
