The concept is simple - meet a set weekly spend target for four consecutive weeks at Coles, and you’ll unlock a huge chunk of bonus Flybuys Points at the end.

These offers are targeted, so not every Flybuys member will receive one, although they are usually sent out quite broadly. Each promo is also personalised, meaning your weekly spend target is based on your shopping habits. For most people, this tends to fall somewhere between $50 and $200 per week.

Of course, the $50 discount at Coles is fixed. It delivers immediate savings, but there’s no real way to stretch the value further. Meanwhile, finding a flight for under $50 these days is about as likely as finding a hotel minibar that won’t bankrupt you. Even after we consider the taxes on a redemption, you’re usually getting $80-$200 in flight value.

How You Can Make Flybuys Reduce Your Spend Target

A cheeky hack to keep your weekly minimum spend low is to ease off your Flybuys spending at Coles in the lead-up to the promo. For example, this is when I’ll shift more of my shopping to Woolworths.

It also means skipping those short, one-off ‘spend $X get X points’ offers that Flybuys runs before a larger 4-week promo. These quick, two-day offers are frequently used to gauge your spending habits, and completing them can lead to a higher weekly target for the 4-week challenge.
