One of the most valuable Amex benefits no one talks about

American Express credit cards offer one of the best rewards programs in Australia with their Membership Rewards program (learn more about flexible rewards programs here), but besides the points, there’s one feature available to all Amex members, and it literally saves me hundreds a year.

That feature is called “Amex Offers”, and it can be highly lucrative if you keep an eye on the “Amex Offers” section from time to time.
Amex Offers is a promotional program that provides regular moneyback, or bonus points offers to members. The only catch is that you have to save the offer to your card, and sometimes there’s a limit on how many people can save the offer.

Popular Amex Offers usually get saved to cards within minutes, so the age-old saying of “you snooze, you lose” really applies here.

Amex Offers can give you moneyback (in the form of a credit on your card) or points bonuses, and you can still use other sites to really maximise the value of your offers (more on that later).

In this Amex Offers guide, we’ll show you how to monitor and save Amex offers to your card and how the redemption works.

How Do Amex Offers Work?

American Express has a powerful membership base which is a lucrative opportunity for a third party brand to promote their service. Amex provides such a marketing service by partnering with brands to offer discounts in the form of a statement credit (moneyback) depending on the brand and the internal agreement.

Amex Offers constantly change, so there’s little benefit for me to list them here, but for example, one of the current Amex Offers is a 15% discount on a selection of popular retail brands when a member pays using their American Express Card. My personal favourites are usually hotel moneyback offers, and on a rare occasion, we even see them for airlines.

With all that said, Amex Offers can be targeted based on specific user data, so you won’t see the exact offers as everyone else. It’s also important to note that if you miss a card payment, offers may be suspended for a time.

How To Activate Amex Offers

Activating and saving an Amex Offer is easy, but many people aren’t aware of the benefit or forget to activate the offers when they go live. To activate an Amex Offer, head over to your account page, scroll down and click “save to Card” on the offers you fancy.

Alternatively, if you prefer to use the Amex App, you will find Amex Offers under the designated “Offers” tab.

How To Use An Amex Offer

Amex Offers must be redeemed directly with the third party brand and paid for using your credit card to which you saved the offer. If, for example, you use PayPal to pay for the transaction using your Amex card, you will not be eligible for the moneyback or points!

It’s also essential to understand the terms and conditions of each offer. Usually, there’s a time limit in which you must redeem the offer, and there’s usually a minimum spend requirement as well.

How To Maximise Amex Offers

For those of you that have multiple American Express cards, it pays to save the offer across your different cards, and sometimes Additional Card Members also get offers on their account. This means you can use the same offer across multiple cards.

Since Amex Offers require you to shop directly with the retailer, you can stack this with popular cashback sites such as Cashrewards (get $20 free) or Shopback (get $10 free). Alternatively, if you prefer bonus points, consider searching for the retailer on the Qantas Mall or Velocity eStore to score some extra bonus points on top of the Amex Offer.

Summing Up – Amex Offers

For me, Amex Offers helps me completely offset the cost of holding my American Express Cards (currently, I have Platinum, Business Platinum and Platinum Reserve). Across my cards, I have saved more than $10,000 over the last 4 years, which is pretty good! It pays to check your account often to make sure you don’t miss out on any hot deals; the best ones often go quick!

Want to make use of the Amex Offers platform, but not a Card Member yet? Now’s a great time to sign up for the American Qantas Ultimate Card! If you’re new to American Express, you will receive 120,000 bonus Qantas Points plus 120 Status Credits when you apply by 15 June 2021, are approved, and meet the minimum spend criteria of $4,500 in the first 3 months. American Express income and credit approval criteria applies. Subject to Terms and Conditions. Interest rates, fees and charges apply.

Cards are offered, issued, and administered by American Express Australia Limited ABN 92 108 952 085, Australian Credit Licence No. 291313.
