From today, customers can finally book a seat on Qantas’ shiny new aircraft. The airline has announced the flying schedule of its new Airbus A321XLR, which will operate its first flight on 25 September. The inaugural flight will operate Sydney–Perth, with a second jet flying Sydney–Melbourne on the same day, marking the start of a new chapter in Qantas’ domestic fleet renewal program.

The introduction of these first two A321XLRs, Great Ocean Road (VH-OGA) and Outback Way (VH-OGB), will make Qantas the first airline in the Asia Pacific region to fly the type. The aircraft represents the latest evolution of Airbus’ single-aisle family, combining the capacity needed for busy domestic routes with the range to serve longer international services.

Qantas promises significant improvements for A321XLR passengers, compared to the Boeing 737s they will gradually replace. These aircraft feature wider seats, larger windows, free Wi-Fi and overhead bins that allow for around 60% more bags than previous jets.

Qantas’ first A321XLR passenger flight schedule for 25 September:

  • QF645, Sydney 10.35am - Perth 1.35pm
  • QF650, Perth 2.35pm - Sydney 8.40pm
  • QF467, Sydney 4.20pm - Melbourne 5.55pm
  • QF484, Melbourne 6.50pm - Sydney 8.15pm

As of 9am this morning, these flights are available to book on Qantas.com.

Qantas Domestic CEO Markus Svensson explained that Qantas customers will be the first in the Asia Pacific to experience the next-generation A321XLR.

“We know many of our customers have been waiting for the opportunity to fly onboard these new aircraft, just as our teams have been looking forward to flying them.”

“The extended flight range will also enable us to operate these aircraft on both domestic and short haul international routes, including destinations across South East Asia and the Pacific Islands that are not currently viable with our current narrowbody fleet,” he adds.

By June 2026, Qantas expects to have seven A321XLR aircraft delivered. The airline currently has the keys to two, with the third jet, Seven Peaks Walk (VH-OGC), having rolled out of the paint shop in Hamburg this month, and due for delivery in November 2025.

Today’s announcement follows the exciting news that Qantas is further expanding its A321XLR fleet, increasing its A321XLR order to 48 aircraft. The expansion of the Group’s largest ever fleet renewal program will see 16 of its A321XLRs configured with lie-flat Business seats and seat back entertainment screens to serve longer routes, including transcontinental services to and from Perth, and short and medium haul international routes.
