Qantas Drops 400,000 Classic Reward Seats With Points Planes Including Paris, Los Angeles and Tokyo
Five‑day frenzy sees every seat on selected flights bookable using Qantas Points.
Qantas Frequent Flyer has thrown open the boarding gate to one of its most expansive redemption hauls yet, releasing 400,000 brand‑new Classic Reward seats across Qantas and Jetstar flights. For the next five days, members can snag seats on dedicated “Points Planes”, where every seat in every cabin is bookable using Qantas Points. This means that every seat on each flight included in the promotion is a Classic Reward, until all seats on the plane are sold!
“Flying Business to cities like Los Angeles and Paris is a highly coveted reward, and we’re thrilled to make it more accessible for our loyal members,” says Qantas Loyalty CEO Andrew Glance, noting that Qantas Points redemptions have hit record levels over the past year.
“We’re releasing thousands of Points Planes and hundreds of thousands more seats, with a particular focus on premium cabins to our most popular destinations.”
But despite the headline, Qantas' latest promotion isn’t exactly a points free‑for‑all. Of the seven advertised Points Planes, only two routes are for Qantas flights (Hamilton Island and Cairns), with the remaining services in Jetstar Economy, limiting premium‑cabin access per Qantas' claim.
The touted Sydney–Paris and Melbourne–Los Angeles routes aren’t Points Planes, but instead, Qantas has opened “nearly 25,000” extra reward seats during a set travel window. We did locate several Business Classic Rewards to LA on those flights, but it is worth noting that not every premium seat is open for booking, like on a Points Plane route. Best practice would be to book ASAP.
While this offer is somewhat of a flop, the good news is that this release of Points Planes is the first in a series of Points Planes planned over the coming months.
The promotion comes as Qantas today increased the price of Classic Reward seats by around 15-20% across most zones. Qantas has also doubled carrier charges on Business and First redemptions in some instances.
