Qatar Airways Swaps Adelaide For Melbourne-Auckland Flights
Sorry Adelaide, Qatar found someone bigger
Qatar Airways is set to launch a new fifth-freedom route between Melbourne and Auckland from December 2026. At the same time, Qatar will scrap its current Adelaide-Auckland flights and reduce capacity to the South Australian capital.
It's a meaningful shakeup for trans-Tasman travellers, who now have the choice of four airlines on the Melbourne-Auckland route, with Qatar joining Air New Zealand, Jetstar and Qantas. The change is especially noteworthy for anyone looking to fly business class, with Qatar offering Qsuites on the route – as opposed to Qantas' inferior 737 business class, which only offers recliner seats.
Qatar Airways flights between Melbourne and Auckland are on sale now, with return business class starting from around $2,400 and economy from around $1,000. We also expect reward seats to pop up shortly for booking with Qatar Privilege Club or Velocity Frequent Flyer.
Qatar’s New Melbourne-Auckland Route
From 9 December 2026, Qatar Airways will operate a daily Doha-Melbourne-Auckland service, as flagged by OAG shared on AeroRoutes. The Melbourne-Auckland flight operates as a fifth-freedom route, meaning customers can book Qatar between Australia and New Zealand on its own.
This change means Qatar will operate between Doha and Melbourne twice daily, instead of previously planned 11 weekly. Of course there are also the Virgin Australia flights operated by Qatar.
Auckland tag flights will run daily on a two-class Boeing 777-300ER, with 42 business class Qsuites and 312 economy seats.
- QR904 departs Doha at 1:50am, landing in Melbourne at 10:20pm. After 3 hours on the ground, the aircraft departs at 1:20am the following day, for a 6:50am arrival into Auckland.
- The return leg QR905 departs Auckland at 1:15pm, landing Melbourne at 3:10pm. After 2 hours on the ground the aircraft departs at 5:10pm, landing Doha at 11:25pm.
Adelaide-Auckland Flights Scrapped
It's important to note Adelaide isn't losing Qatar Airways altogether, but the fifth-freedom tag flight onwards to Auckland ends after a final service on 8 December 2026. Qatar currently operates daily between Doha and Adelaide, and will cut back to five weekly flights from 1 February 2027.
As of 9 December 2026, Qatar switches to the smaller Airbus A350-900 on its Adelaide-Doha flights, replacing the Boeing 777-300ERs currently serving South Australia. This means 994 fewer return seats per week on the route.
Qatar's A350-900 cabin configuration isn't universal across the fleet, but it appears the airline will deploy the 283-passenger variant here, with 36 in business class and 247 in economy. These aircraft still carry Qsuites in business and ultra-fast Starlink WiFi, so the seat itself isn't a downgrade, there's just less of it to go around.
Summing Up
It’s great to see Qatar Airways move Melbourne to twice-daily, and the Auckland tag flight will make for a much more comfortable trans-Tasman experience. But for this leg alone, I'm not sure I would want to depart at 1:20am, even if the experience is far superior to other airlines operating during daylight hours. At least Auckland to Melbourne is far more reasonable timing wise.
The change is somewhat interesting, given Qatar only returned Adelaide-Auckland on 17 June and is already calling it quits. To be fair, the airline only planned to run this flight until September and have since extended it to December.
