Qatar Airways will fly between Doha and Western Sydney Airport (WSI) from 15 December 2027, becoming the seventh airline to commit to Sydney's new airport. Tickets go on sale on 19 December 2026, almost a full year before the first flight takes off.

Western Sydney will be Qatar's seventh Australian gateway, joining Sydney (Kingsford Smith), Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.

Qatar will start with three weekly flights on its Boeing 777-300ER, fitted with 42 Qsuite business class seats and 312 economy seats. Free Starlink Wi-Fi is included for Privilege Club members. The airline says it plans to build the route up to daily over time, which would use the full seven weekly WSI services Australia granted Qatar in May.

It's a long-awaited win for Qatar. In 2023 the federal government knocked back its bid to double its weekly Australian services, and Western Sydney is the first new capacity Qatar has secured in its own right since then.

The Schedule

  • QR906 Doha to Western Sydney (Mon, Wed, Fri): Departs 1:40am, arrives 11:45pm (14hr 5min)
  • QR907 Western Sydney to Doha (Tue, Thu, Sat): Departs 4:10pm, arrives 11pm (14hr 50min)

The 11:45pm arrival would be off limits at Sydney Kingsford Smith under its 11pm curfew, so Qatar is putting WSI's 24-hour operation to use straight away. The aircraft then sits on the ground for more than 16 hours before heading back to Doha. The 4:10pm departure lands in Doha at 11pm, in good time for Qatar's late-night wave of departures to Europe.

The new route will also tie into Qatar's partnership with Virgin Australia, in which Qatar holds a 25% stake.

Qatar Airways Group CEO Hamad Al Khater called the launch the next chapter in the airline's relationship with Australia.

"The new route will link Western Sydney directly with Doha and, through Hamad International Airport, with more than 170 destinations across the Middle East, Africa, Europe and beyond, strengthening existing ties and creating new opportunities for trade, tourism and investment between Australia, Qatar and the wider world."

"With the airport operating around the clock, we will bring more international visitors to New South Wales, offer Australian travellers the premium Qatar Airways experience from a second Sydney gateway, and give exporters across the state a direct cargo route to customers in the Gulf and beyond."

Booking Qatar's Western Sydney Flights With Points

Qatar prices reward seats between Australia and Europe via Doha from 35,000 Avios in economy and 70,000 Avios in business (off-peak) through Privilege Club.

In Australia, Amex Membership Rewards and Virgin Money Points both transfer to Qatar Privilege Club. Amex converts at 3:1, so 210,000 MR Points covers a one-way Qsuite redemption to Doha.

Alternatively you can buy Qatar Aiways Avios or British Airways Avios during a points bonus sale.

Velocity members can also book Qatar flights. From Sydney, a Velocity reward seat to Doha costs 56,000 points in economy or 119,500 points in business, and I'd expect WSI to follow suit.

Qantas Frequent Flyer members will find it harder. Qatar only releases business class reward seats to Qantas sporadically, and usually at the last minute.

Summing Up

Qatar Airways joins Qantas, Jetstar, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand, Vietjet and Fiji Airways as confirmed carriers at WSI. The airport opens to passengers this Sunday, 25 October 2026, with Jetstar operating the first flight to the Gold Coast.

Three weekly flights is a cautious start. Even so, a 777-300ER with Qsuites flying direct from Western Sydney to Doha is a strong product for this side of the city.
