Evee – What is it?
Unlike traditional car rental brands such as Hertz, Europcar and the like, Evee (and no, it’s not Eevee the Pokémon) doesn’t own its fleet of cars. Instead, it follows a P2P model (peer-to-peer) where Evee provides the technology, insurance and marketing for owners of electric vehicles to make money from their cars.
Renters can choose a wide selection of cars on the platform and pick the exact model they want to hire. Want to hire a Tesla Model Y, Model S or maybe a Polestar? No problem! Evee rental hosts are equally passionate about electric cars, so you will find a massive selection of brands and models to try.
Renting A Tesla with Evee Car hire
Signing up for Evee is a straightforward process. All you’ll need is an Australian driver’s license and a clean track record on the road!
Once your account is verified, you can go ahead and search for the car and location from where you want to rent. Having rented a car from Evee on 2 separate occasions now, I’ve noticed that all the hosts I’ve encountered so far rent out their Teslas semi-professionally. That said, Evee tells me the majority of their fleet is supported by owners who rent out their EV when not using the car.
Evee claims that hosts make up to $24,000 a year from renting out their vehicle, not bad!
Once your rental request is accepted, you can choose to meet your host at their given address, or most offer a drop-off service at an extra fee. This would be particularly handy if you’re arriving at the airport and simply want the car there ready to go.
If you’ve never driven an electric vehicle before, hosts will be happy to give you a tutorial before sending you on your way.
How about insurance?
Evee is the only Australian car-sharing platform that offers specialised car rental insurance for Tesla and other electric vehicles up to a market value of $150,000. This is the base level of insurance included with each rental, but the excess will vary depending on the vehicle.
For example, for a standard Tesla Model 3 hire, you would be looking at $4,500 worth of excess. Evee recommends RentalCover to reduce the damage liability down to $0 for a small fee but there might be other options more suitable, for example, if your credit card comes with a rental excess cover. Adding this policy is highly recommended, especially with the higher-end performance models!
Tesla hire Perth
On both my rental occasions, I decided to hire a Tesla in Perth, WA. I find that the Tesla long-range Model 3 is a perfect option for road trips down south. Of course, it pays to know where the fast chargers are, but generally speaking, there are plenty of options and having access to Tesla autopilot makes tedious long-range drives much more enjoyable. While I love my Land Rover Defender, the driving experience (not to mention the cost) is worlds apart! If you’re looking to hire a Tesla in Perth (or any other electric model car, for that matter!), you will definitely want to try out Evee.
Evee extra charges?
When you’re renting an electric vehicle, making use of the fast charging networks around Australia is a must (especially on a road trip). These charges are billed directly to the owner of the car in most cases which are then automatically added to your final bill.
Some owners also have restrictions on how many KMs you can do per day at the advertised rental fee (charges per KM apply if you go over); others, however will offer unlimited KMs, which is much more preferable.
Any age restrictions to hire a Tesla?
Evee has a couple of age restrictions for renters. Standard vehicles have a minimum age of 25 or older, whereas performance vehicles have a minimum age of 30 or over… for obvious reasons!
As for additional drivers, this is possible at no charge as long as they have a registered account with Evee and are ID-verified with a minimum age of 25.
