Virgin Australia is encouraging the Switch-A-Roo from you know who. As of today, Velocity Frequent Flyer is offering a fast track for those travellers who haven’t held Velocity elite status over the last few years, and currently hold Gold or higher status with Qantas Frequent Flyer.
While Velocity Frequent Flyer has previously offered status matches that were wide open to elite frequent flyers of almost any airline, this offer works a little differently. That’s because Australia’s most wonderful airline is limiting their latest Discover Gold promotion to “members of any other Australian frequent flyer program that currently hold Gold status or higher”. In other words, Qantas and nobody else.

What Is A Velocity Discover Gold Trial?
Discover Gold is a 3-month status trial in which you’ll receive most of the benefits of Velocity Gold Status. That includes access to Virgin Australia domestic lounges, priority boarding, preferential seating, an additional baggage allowance, and bonus Velocity Points when travelling with Virgin Australia.
During your three-month Discover Gold Trial period, members won’t receive Gold member baggage tags, a physical membership card, complimentary partner memberships, guaranteed economy Reward Seats and membership pause for parental leave.
If you enjoy the golden life, earning just 80 Status Credits and flying at least one VA sector during those three months will unlock the full suite of Velocity Gold membership for a full year. Otherwise, at the end of your Discover Gold trial, you’ll drop to Silver status.
How Do I Get A Velocity Status Match?
To apply for a status match with Velocity, simply send an email to [email protected] with the subject line “Velocity Discover Gold Trial offer”. Be sure to use the same email address that is currently linked to your Velocity account.
To be eligible, that email must include your full name, Velocity number and a photo of your valid Gold Status or higher Australian frequent flyer program membership card.
You’ll need to correctly send this email by 11:59pm AEST 15 September 2023 to receive a 3-month Velocity Discover Gold Trial.
Keep in mind that it might take up to six weeks for Velocity to process your Discover Gold application and apply your trial status.
The Fine Print: Velocity Discover Gold
There’s a few key points to keep in mind before blasting an email through to Velocity. To be eligible for a Discover Gold Trial, you must;
Hold a valid Velocity membership.
- Currently have Gold Status or above with another Australian frequent flyer program.
- Not held Silver, Gold or Platinum Status with Velocity since April 2020.

- August 2023: 3-month Discover Gold trial for Gold and above Qantas frequent flyers.

If you are Qantas Platinum, do you only get Virgin Gold? And presumably if you are Lifetime Gold with Qantas, you don’t lose that?
Yes it’s only matched to Gold. And no you wouldn’t lose Lifetime Gold
