Earlier today I speculated that a popular campaign first launched in Singapore and then India was coming to Australia.
Well, it’s now official! American Express is offering a HUGE double rewards for all Platinum and Centurion card holders. Here’s what the email says:

Earn double the points
For the next three months, you’ll earn double points across your spend. From daily essentials, to online shopping and even when ordering in. That’s 4.5points for every dollar spent, except for government spend where you will earn 2points, up until 20 July2020.
With no expiry and no cap on the amount of points you can earn each year, your points will accumulate regardless of how much you spend. So they’ll be waiting and ready for you to use, whenever you’d like.
Enjoy double the value when you Select+Pay with points
Additionally, for the next three months you can enjoy double the value of your points. By using Select + Pay with points to pay or part-pay for any eligible item on your Card statement with your Membership Rewards points, you’ll now enjoy twice the value.
Select + Pay gives you the freedom to pay for almost any item on your Card statement with points, including your annual fee – and now they will go twice as far. From your electricity bill to your weekly grocery shop, it’s easy. Simply select an eligible transaction on the Amex App or your online statement and select to pay with points.

What Is Select + Pay?
Select + Pay is a feature available to all Amex members who earn Membership Rewards. Essentially it’s a way you can use your points for cash-back. To use it, simply login to your account and click on the “use points for charges” button which will let you pay off individual charges with your points balance.
Usually 1,000 MR = $5 but until July 20, 2020 1,000 MR = $10. Platinum cards earn 2.25 MR per $1, but until July 20th this is also increased to 4.5 MR for each (eligible) $1 you spend.
Conclusion
This might be the best offer I’ve seen in a long time! 4.5 points per dollar is nothing to be sneezed at (pun intended), and by earning double points + double value when opting for Select + Pay ( a fancy name for cash back), you can essentially get 4.5% cash back until July 20th!
Personally, I won’t be using points to pay off card charges, but I know a lot of people will be considering using their points this way, and at 4.5% it certainly might be worth it.
