Qantas Frequent Flyers can now earn points with Afterpay, under the new partnership between Qantas and the buy now pay later service. From today, you can earn up to 5,000 Qantas points by linking your Qantas Frequent Flyer and AfterPay accounts. Plus, first-time users can score 500 bonus points when they join AfterPay and link their accounts.

AfterPay has transformed the way we spend, allowing shoppers to receive products instantly and pay over four fortnightly instalments at no additional cost. The service has become so popular that it now accounts for more than 15 per cent of all online retail in Australia.

The trial partnership between Qantas Frequent Flyer and AfterPay is valid for members who link their accounts before 8 September 2020 and spend up to until 8 March 2021.

What is AfterPay?

AfterPay is a payment service that breaks down purchases into four equal instalments. Members pay the first instalment at the time of purchase, and the remaining three installments each fortnight. Both online and instore orders are approved within seconds and received as they would with any other form of payment.

The idea of AfterPay is to help with cash flow by breaking down the cost of items into smaller payments over a six week period. Plus, the service is free to use as long as you pay on time.

AfterPay Fees

AfterPay is completely free to use if you pay each of your instalments on time. If you are unable to pay on the due date, you will be charged a flat late fee of $10. If that payment is still outstanding after a further seven days, you will be charged an additional $7.

Thankfully, late fees are capped based on the original order value, as below.

  • Orders under $40: Capped at $10
  • Orders from $40 to $272: Capped at 25%
  • Orders above $272 : Capped at $68

Note that you will not be able to make any AfterPay purchases with overdue payments on your account.

Who can get AfterPay?

To be eligible for AfterPay in Australia you must:

  • Live in Australia
  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Have a valid email address and mobile phone number
  • Hold a valid Australian bank card to make purchases
  • Be able to enter a legally binding contract

New AfterPay users earn 500 bonus points

New AfterPay users can score 500 bonus Qantas points just for signing up. Also eligible are those AfterPay members who joined in the last 12 months but are yet to make a purchase. The 500 bonus points will be awarded 8-10 weeks after your first order is placed.

Joining AfterPay is a relatively straightforward process:

Step 1: Visit the AfterPay Sign Up page.
Step 2: Enter your email address followed by your mobile number.
Step 3: Verify the 6-digit SMS code sent to your mobile.
Step 4: Enter in your full name, date of birth and address.
Step 5: Verify your ID with a driver’s license, medicare card or passport.
Step 6: You can set up a password the next time you log in.

How to link AfterPay to Qantas Frequent Flyer

You must link your AfterPay and Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts in order to earn Qantas points. Here’s how to link your accounts:

Link your accounts on the AfterPay website:
Step 1: Navigate to “My Account” in the top menu bar.
Step 2: Click on “Link Account” next to the Qantas Frequent Flyer box.
Step 3: Enter your QFF number and click “Submit”.

Link your accounts using the AfterPay app:
Step 1: Navigate to “Profile” in the bottom right corner.
Step 2: Select “Profile” at the top of the menu.
Step 3: Click on “Qantas Frequent Flyer” and enter your QFF number, then tap “Submit”.

What’s the earn rate?

New AfterPay users or those who have not made a purchase within the 12 months prior to 8 July 2020 will earn 1 Qantas point per $1 spent.

Unfortunately, existing AfterPay members must spend $1,000 before they can earn 1 Qantas point per $1 spent on purchases after this amount is reached.

Summing up: my take

AfterPay can be a useful cash flow tool when used properly, and with the added bonus of Qantas points, the service is set to become more appealing to points nerds and frequent flyers especially. Although the $1000 qualifying spend for existing users and relatively low points cap is somewhat poor, AfterPay could be a great way to earn additional Qantas points. You could even boost your earnings by setting your Qantas points earning credit card as your preferred payment method.
