Qantas Sets December Date For Non-Flying Status Credits & Removal Of Points Club, Green Tier

Qantas has set 8 December 2026 as the date its Frequent Flyer program retires Points Club and Green Tier, and switches on the ability to earn Status Credits through everyday spending. It's the first firm date attached to Qantas’ landmark status overhaul flagged in February, but the substance hasn't moved much since then.

We now have further clarity on a few details, but this announcement is more about the timeline of when Qantas’ status changes will land, verses the exact mechanics behind each change.

Plus, Qantas has dropped a hint that they will launch a new international airline partnership in the coming weeks.

Qantas Loyalty CEO Andrew Glance said that the frequent flyer scheme is stronger and more diversified than it's ever been.

"We know how deeply members value their status and the travel benefits that come with our tiers…Earning Status Credits on the ground will give members more ways to climb our tiers, while driving even greater engagement for our 700 coalition partners across banking, retail, insurance, travel and more.”

Points Club & Green Tier Scrapped

We have known since February 2026 that Qantas Frequent Flyer sub-programs Points Club and Green Tier will be retired at some point. Today, Qantas has confirmed that these programs will be scrapped from 8 December 2026.

Members can continue to earn Points Club until that date. If you already hold Points Club or Points Club Plus status, or attain it before 8 December, will continue to have access to the membership perks for the remainder of your current and next membership year.

Green tier benefits will end immediately on 8 December 2026. From that date, members who have unlocked Green Tier but have not selected a bonus reward will have 90 days to select their reward.

Earning Status Credits On The Ground

Another Qantas Frequent Flyer update that we knew about is the ability to earn Status Credits without flying. This new permanent feature will land from 8 December 2026, and comes after a popular promotion offering Status Credits on the ground.

Members will be able to earn up to 140 Status Credits on the ground each membership year, across ten categories. Those ten non-flying Status Credits categories and their associated partners are included in the table below.

Later in the year, Qantas will share details on the number of Status Credits earned per category, and and how to complete each one.

While Qantas isn’t yet announcing the requirements to earn Status Credits in each category, we know that these will be tied to earning a specific number of Qantas Points per category, and each will have a different requirement to unlock.

Status Credits earned on the ground will also count towards Lifetime tier balances.

Status Credit Roll Over

From 8 December 2026, Qantas will become the first Australian airline to offer a Status Credit roll over benefit. This will allow flyers to carry up to 50% of their excess Status Credits into their next membership year. That’s to say a portion of the Status Credits you earn beyond the retention requirement for the current year will count towards retaining status for the following membership year.

This benefit is replacing Loyalty Bonuses, which will be scrapped at some point in 2027.

Qantas Status Credit Roll Over is capped based on status tier:

• Silver: 100
• Gold: 350
• Platinum: 500
• Platinum One: 500

Retaining Qantas Status Becomes Harder

We already knew about the removal of separate attain and retain requirements for Qantas status. The update today is that these changes will roll out in early 2027.

This means that Qantas will make it harder for members to retain frequent flyer status, by moving to a single Status Credit target for each tier. Instead of offering a lower threshold to retain status, you will need the same number of Status Credits to both earn and retain.

For example, Platinum status will require 1400 Status Credits annually, whereas previously it was 1400 to attain and 1200 to retain. This makes it harder for loyal frequent flyers to hold onto their perks, with Platinum members soon needing to earn 16% more Status Credits to keep their membership.

Qantas’ new status requirements will be:

• Silver: 300 to earn/renew (was 250 to renew)
• Gold: 700 to earn/renew (was 600 to renew)
• Platinum: 1400 to earn/renew (was 1200 to renew)
• Platinum One: 3600 to earn/renew (unchanged)

Credit Card To Offer Status Credits On Reward Flights

Qantas announced in June that the popular Points Club benefit of earning Status Credits on Qantas Classic Reward bookings will return as a perk of an unnamed Qantas credit card. The airline has today reiterated its commitment to launching this perk, and has advised this will come sometime in 2026.

During a media briefing on Thursday, Qantas Loyalty CEO Andrew Glance hinted that this benefit would land on an existing credit card, rather than a brand new product.

It's not yet clear which rewards credit card will offer Status Credit earning on reward flights, but members might not even need to use that card to pay for the tax portion of their redemption. Simply holding the qualifying card seems to be the trigger.

Given Qantas Frequent Flyer's increased visibility over Qantas Money credit cards, it wouldn't be surprising to see this land on the Qantas Money Platinum ($349 annual fee) or the Qantas Money Titanium ($1,200 annual fee).

Summing Up

Let’s be honest. Today's announcement is more of a calendar entry than a news update.

The headline changes of scrapping Points Club and Green Tier, Status Credit roll over, and non-flying Status Credits, were all flagged back in February. The big news here is the 8 December start date.
