Qantas has just announced that from 1 July 2026, Platinum, Gold and Qantas Club members will no longer have access to Qantas lounges when flying on international Jetstar (JQ) flights.

That's right, if you've been enjoying the good life in the Qantas First or Business Lounge before hopping on your Jetstar flight to Bali, you're about to be sent back to the terminal with the rest of the peasants. The days of champagne before a 3-3-3 economy seat to Denpasar are officially numbered.

What's Changing?

Here's the damage:

Lounge access on international Jetstar flights is gone. From 1 July 2026, Qantas Platinum, Gold and Qantas Club members will no longer be able to waltz into a Qantas lounge before an international Jetstar flight. This also applies to Complimentary Lounge Invitation holders.

Complimentary Lounge Invitations are being nerfed. Not only can they no longer be used on international JQ flights, but they'll also only be transferrable to someone travelling on the same flight as you. So no more gifting your spare invitations to mates flying on a different day.

The Workarounds

There are a few ways to keep your lounge access if you're flying Jetstar:

Book a QF codeshare operated by Jetstar. If Qantas sells the ticket under a QF flight number but it's operated by Jetstar, you're still in. This is the obvious play for anyone who wants to keep their lounge access — just make sure you're booking the QF code, not the JQ one.

Fly Jetstar domestically. These changes only affect international JQ flights. Domestic Jetstar flights are unaffected, so your pre-flight lounge visit before a JQ hop to Melbourne is safe.

Buy a Jetstar Business Max fare. If you're willing to fork out for the top-tier Jetstar fare, you'll still get lounge access. Although it's not clear if Qantas Platinum members will be able to stack this for Qantas First Lounge access.

The Platinum One Exception

Qantas has confirmed that Platinum One members are exempt from the new restrictions. So if you're at the very top of the QFF food chain, nothing changes for you.

However, the domestic leg of an international Jetstar flight is not exempt. Qantas considers those domestic sectors as part of the international JQ itinerary, so the restriction still applies even on the domestic tag flight.

With that it's probably safe to assume the hard working politicians with Chairmans Lounge access won't be booted out when flying Jetstar.

My Take

Look, I get it. Anyone who's been in a Qantas lounge recently knows they've been getting more and more crowded, and JQ passengers with status are a contributing factor. Qantas is also pouring money into lounge upgrades — the new Auckland Business Lounge is done, LA has gotten a refresh, and a brand new Sydney International Business Lounge is on the way for early 2027. They want those lounges to feel premium, and having them packed with passengers on their way to a low-cost carrier flight wasn't exactly on brand.

That said, this is a genuine downgrade for frequent flyers who were loyal enough to earn Platinum or Gold status but chose Jetstar for routes that Qantas simply doesn't fly, or where the QF fare was three times the price.

The QF codeshare workaround is the one to watch. If Qantas makes codeshare tickets readily available on popular JQ international routes, this is less painful. If they don't? Then this is just another case of Qantas taking away benefits while telling you they're improving the experience.
