Obtaining a Qantas status extension is never guaranteed, and it's not exactly a loophole either. It’s closer to a customer retention gesture, used at the discretion of the agent or team you speak to, in addition to internal Qantas policies.

There are a few factors that seem to influence whether Qantas will offer you a status extension:

• It's your first time asking: Members who have never previously requested a Status Credit top-up report a very high success rate.
• The shortfall is small: Being less than 20 Status Credits short is a very different ask to being 100+ short.
• You have a solid track record: A consistent history of flying Qantas and retaining status in previous years works in your favour.
• You have a forward booking: Even a flight booked for after your renewal date can help signal ongoing commitment to the airline.

My Situation: How I Asked Qantas For A Status Extension

Here's how this played out for me. With four days left in my membership year, I was just six status credits short of retaining Qantas Gold.

Booking a flight purely to chase six Status Credits didn't make financial or environmental sense to me. So instead of paying for a flight I didn't actually need, I called Qantas and asked for a status extension. I explained my situation honestly, including how many credits I was short and that I was reluctant to book an unnecessary flight.

After being put on hold for a few minutes, the agent came back and informed me that they would manually extend my Gold Status for another 12-months.

How Many Status Credits Do I Need?

• Silver: 300 to earn, 250 to retain, lifetime 7,000
• Gold: 700 to earn, 600 to retain, lifetime 14,000
• Platinum: 1,400 to earn or 1,200 to retain, lifetime 75,000
• Platinum One: 3,600 to earn or 3,600 to retain (2,700+ from QF flights)

Note that from 2027, Qantas will remove the reduced target to retain status, in favour of a single target to both earn and retain. The current earn target will become the new earn/retain target.
